The Pergamon Altar

The Pergamon Altar was commissioned by the Attalid rulers of Pergamon and built in the 2nd Century BC in Asia Minor. The altar once rested on a podium, decorated with a marble frieze depicting the Battle of the Giants against the Olympian Gods. The altar was later destroyed. The specially constructed Pergamon Museum houses a partial reconstruction of the altar on a scale of 1:1 with original fragments. Other original fragments are displayed on the surrounding walls. The Pergamon Museum is located on the Museum Island.
